"A Grand Day Out"

Now the Elizabeth Line is open, intrepid travellers may wish to combine a trip on London's newest railway to come to Epping and see one of London Underground's oldest railway exhibits - our pre-1938 stock Locomotive L11.  Ideal if you have a London Freedom Pass or other concessionary travel pass and are not in a hurry, this journey takes you on a ride on the new, fast Elizabeth Line trains from Liverpool Street, then on two leisurely bus rides across open Essex countryside and finally to Epping tube station, home of Epping Signalling Museum.

The Elizabeth Line runs trains to Shenfield from Liverpool Street every 7-8 minutes. Alight at Brentwood station - one stop before Shenfield. From Brentwood catch a bus to Chipping Ongar then from Chipping Ongar catch a second bus to Epping tube station. A suggested journey timetable is detailed below. Please check timetables on your chosen day of travel in case of changes. Remember the Museum is only open on Saturdays, 10am til 4:30pm.

Start your journey at Liverpool Street station.

  • Catch the 10:26 Elizabeth Line departure towards Shenfield, arriving at Brentwood at 11:04

  • Get off the train at Brentwood and leave the station at the Warley Hill exit (upstairs)

  • Cross the road at the traffic lights then turn left across the railway bridge

  • Catch the 11:22 service 21 bus at the bus stop outside 'The Emporium' to Ongar, Four Wantz. They run hourly

  • Arrive at Chipping Ongar at 11:46 and get off at the stop by the Epping-Ongar railway station.

  • Failing that, catch the 12:13 420 bus to Epping Station.

  • Arrive at Epping station 26 minutes later at 12:39

  • Epping Museum is straight down through the car park. Look for our yellow locomotive.

There are Central Line trains back from Epping to Liverpool Street roughly every 5 minutes.
